Super Saiya-jin 1

(As Goku called it after he reached Super Saiya-jin 3) This stage was first reached by Goku in the Freeza Saga as he fought Freeza.
To go SSJ an intense anger or rage is needed to unleash the power. Goku first went SSJ after the death of his best friend Kuririn, which pushed him over the edge. Like Goku, several of the last remaining Saiyans have also achieved Super Saiya-jin.

Physical description: Increased muscle mass, and long blond hair that stands on end. Occasionally accompanied by a yellow aura. **Note** A Saiya-jin is normally born with a tail. As long as he keeps his tail, he can turn into a Were-monkey.

 Ultimate SSJ:

This stage is accomplished during the Cell Game. At first it was thought by Vegeta that this was the level past SSJ. This is really an in-between level, that is mainly using brute strength. It makes them really big and bulky, which is a downfall. Because of their size it is a really slow fighting form, and never really used again after Cell explains how it is not good.

Physical description: Muscle mass is extremely increased, hair stays the same a regular SSJ, and a yellow aura still flows around them. The only difference is muscle mass.

 Super Saiya-jin 2

This stage was first reached by Gohan. After Cell had caused all the pain to his friends, and then stepped on his friend android 16's head while he was giving his last words, Gohan snapped and unleashed his full power. SSJ 2 is a huge step from level 1 because the power is intensified greatly. It is far stronger than Ultimate SSJ, which is just brute strength as Cell told Trunks.

Physical description: Greater muscle mass than SSJ1, and a few more inches of blond hair. Power increases greatly from that of SSJ and is a faster level. Occasionally accompanied by zapping of silver lightning.

 Super Saiya-jin 3
(Beyond the Beyond Super Saiyajin) Goku first achieved this level during a fight with Majin Buu. This is the most powerful level of Super Saiya-jin. Majin Buu had a lttle struggle over this power, but in this stage power is used up very fast, so Goku couldn't hold it very long. SSJ3 was also used in Dragon Ball GT, but Goku couldn't hold it due to his little body's lack of strength.

Physical Description: Goku's physical appearance is more lean and menacing looking, with about 4 and half feet of flowing blond hair and a larger muscle mass.

**Note** Only Goku and Gotenks have achieved this level. No other Saiya-jin, or Saiya-jin half-breed has.

 Super Saiya-jin 4
This stage is also known as "level 4" instead of SSJ 4, because the fact is that some people don't believe this to be an actual SSJ stage. This is also the only stage with a tail. Goku was the first to obtain this stage, and Vegeta cheated by using one of Bulma's inventions(called Brute Ray) to obtain it. (SSJ4 should therefore be called "Super Goku 4.") In SSJ4, Goku is the stongest fighter in the universe.

Physical description: Although Goku was wished by the Dragon Balls to become a child again, in SSJ4 form, he has his normal adult body with a bit more muscle mass. His upper torso is covered in red fur, his hair is black, and his eyes are red-rimmed.

 Oozaru Transformations

Were-Monkey (Oozaru)

When a Saiyajin stares at a full moon, he/she will change into a 20-foot tall, monsterous beast called a Were-monkey (Oozaru, in Japanese, translates to "Big Monkey). This is possibly the most powerful level under SSJ3. All Saiya-jin (excluding Goku and Gohan) will be able to control themselves during this stage (although in Dragonball GT, it is implied that Vegeta couldn't control himself in oozaru form, but Baby could.) It doesn't matter which full moon they look at (in Dragonball GT, Goku turned Oozaru by looking at the full Earth. And, Vegeta had the ability to create a pocket-sized full moon when he first arrived on Earth to fight Goku and Gohan.)

**Note** A Saiya-jin must have a tail to be able to turn Oozaru. If the tail is cut off, they revert to normal. If the tail is pulled out by the roots, the Saiya-jin will not turn Oozaru ever again.

Ougon Oozaru (Golden Were-Monkey)

A level that was achieved by Goku and Vegeta-Baby in Dragon Ball GT. This is the most powerful form of Were-monkey, demonstrated by Goku in DBGT eps 38-40, when he swatted Vegeta-Baby all over Planet Plant (Baby's recreation of the Tsufuru home planet.) The main physical difference with the Ougon stage, is that the fur is gold instead of brown.
